How to Set up Google’s Free Product Listings (Google Surface)
With the Coronavirus pandemic in full effect, Google just recently announced that online United States retailers can now place free product listings on Google Shopping. This is great news for eCommerce retailers!
Why?
Just take what Bill Ready’s, President of Commerce at Google, said: “With hundreds of millions of shopping searches on Google each day, we know that many retailers have the items people need in stock and ready to ship, but are less discoverable online.”
Free product listings will help give merchants of all sizes free exposure by Google consumers and advertising that’s free? It can’t get better than that. So let’s jump into how you set-up your free product listings on Google.
How to Set-Up Google Free Product Listings (Google Surface)
Setting up Google’s Free Product Listings (Google Surface) is amazingly simple, especially if you already have a Google Merchant Center account. If you don’t, you’ll have to create a Google Merchant Center account, which is not only easy, but Google offers its Free Product Listings (Google Surface) as an option at the outset.
So by creating your Google Merchant Center account, you’re also creating your Free Product Listings (Google Surface).
Below are the instructions for both scenarios.
You already have a Google Merchant Center account
- Log in to your Merchant Account.
- Click the “Growth” option on the left-hand navigation
- Click the “Manage Programs” option that appears under “Growth”
- Click the “GET STARTED” link under the “Surfaces across Google” option
Log in to your Merchant Account.

You can now set up your Products to display in “Surfaces across Google”
If you don’t have a Google Merchant Center account…
- Visit the Google Merchant Center page
- Log in with the Google account you’d like to use for this
- Enter your business details
- Accept the terms and conditions
- Select “Surfaces across Google” and click Continue
- Review your selections and click “Create Account”
- Add your product and business information
You can now set up your Products to display in “Surfaces across Google”

Accept the terms and conditions
Select “Surfaces across Google” (and any other services you want to sign up for) and click continue
Review your selections and click “Create Account” (or click “Back” if you need to change something.
