If your brand is new to TikTok, you’ve probably noticed three letters showing up in a lot of TikTok captions: #fyp.

What do these letters stand for, and why are they important? Read on as we explain.

What is FYP in TikTok?

FYP stands for For You Page. There are two main feeds on TikTok: the For You Page, and the Following feed. The For You Page is the first page you see when you open TikTok, and it’s where many people stay. TikTok’s For You Page shows you videos you might enjoy, based on the algorithm’s best guesses — similar to the Explore page on Instagram.

Getting your video featured on FYP is the holy grail of TikTok. The FYP plays a major role in the ascension of many TikTok creators, showing their videos to a massive audience of people who didn’t previously know them — and now may decide to follow them or check out their other videos.

In other words, getting on TikTok’s FYP is one of the best ways to get more followers on TikTok.

How does TikTok decide what shows up on FYP?

Each user’s FYP is different. The algorithm serves up different videos based on the user’s preferences and previous interactions on TikTok. For example, your account settings, such as where you live and the language you speak, play a role in which videos the FYP shows you. TikTok also uses your previous interactions, such as the types of videos you like and hashtags you follow, to determine which videos to include in your For You Page.

Finally, the video itself factors into TikTok’s algorithm. Trending or popular videos are more likely to show up in the FYP, as are videos that include certain hashtags, filters, or sound effects that you may have engaged within the past.

TikTok’s goal with the FYP is to keep users engaged, watching, and in the app — so the algorithm does its best to include videos tailored to each user’s preferences.

How to get on TikTok’s For You Page

TikTok’s FYP has a lot to offer brands and creators on TikTok. To get your videos featured, follow these TikTok best practices.

  1. Add hashtags to your TikTok captions. Include relevant and trending hashtags, including the #fyp hashtag.
  2. Optimize your video quality. Use natural lighting or a ring light so viewers can see your subject clearly, and a tripod to stabilize your camera.
  3. Review your TikTok analytics (free with TikTok Pro Accounts). These insights can help you tailor your videos to your audience’s interests, and determine the best time to post.
  4. Hop on trending sounds. The algorithm likes to promote popular content, so adding a trending sound or music effect to your TikTok can help you get on FYP.
  5. Post shorter videos. For the FYP, TikTok prefers to include videos that people will watch in their entirety, as that signals high engagement and interest.
  6. Make your captions intriguing. Tease what people are about to view in your TikTok with hooks like “You won’t believe what happens at the end” or “Watch as we reveal…”
  7. Engage with your comments. Responding to comments on your TikTok video boosts engagement, and can also help you grow your community.
