Stay in the Safe Zone with Instagram Reels

How are your ads on Instagram Reels performing?

If they’re not engaging and you’re racking your brain trying to figure out why, we’re here to help. The solution could be surprisingly simple.

Let us introduce you to the Instagram Reels “safe zone.”

What is the safe zone on Instagram Reels?

The Instagram Reels safe zone refers to the area on your Reel where your logos, text, and visuals will remain completely visible — and not obscured by your username, heart and share buttons, and other parts of the Instagram interface.

Instagram Reels utilize a 9:16 aspect ratio, but that doesn’t mean your Reel gets to use all that space. Various Instagram elements, from buttons to logos and usernames, also need a spot to shine.

So, when creating your Instagram Reel, your goal is to ensure all of your essential content stays in the green “safe zone.” Anything in the red “no zone” may get covered up.

Watch this for our quick breakdown of Instagram Reels safe zones vs. no zones. (And while you’re at it, like and subscribe!)

What shows up in the “no zone”?

Here’s a closer look at the dimensions of the no zone, including the specific elements that may be covering up your Reel:

  • The top 14% of the screen: This area shows Instagram branding, the time, and other cell phone icons like your battery and WiFi status.
  • The bottom 35%–40% of the screen: This area contains your username and photo, CTA button, caption, and possibly a Sponsored tag. You also have the like, comment, and share buttons on the right.
  • About 6% on the sides of the screen: With bigger devices, Instagram may zoom in on a Reel to better show your creative, which means the edges can be slightly cropped, too.

If your head is spinning with all these percentages, don’t worry! You do not have to memorize these awkward dimensions. Meta has a “Safe zone guardrail” you can toggle on in Meta Ads Manager to preview your Reels and make sure they stay in the safe zone.

Here’s another pro tip for designing Instagram Reels that stay in the safe zone: keep your captions short. If you need inspiration, check out our free AI sentence rewriter.

How ignoring the safe zone can hurt your ad performance

Not paying attention to these spacing rules can lead to clumsy designs, such as your brand logo sitting directly under the comment bubble. Or your caption getting distorted by text included in the video. A vital caption might also end up partially blocked by the like button.

At best, these kinds of gaffes are embarrassing. At worst, they could be hurting your campaign performance.

The easiest solution is to center your visuals and text both vertically and horizontally within the middle “safe zone.” This is the best way to guarantee visibility for all the important parts of your ad (along with using Meta’s safe zone guardrail).

And always, always, always preview before you post!

Stay in the (safe) zone

Instagram Reels can help you gain more followers, build brand awareness, and convert more customers.

Always keep your core storytelling elements anchored in the central area of the screen. By respecting these safe zone guidelines, you guarantee that your CTA, logo, and messaging are perfectly visible to every single viewer.
